25 Feb 09, 8th Chapter Meeting@Headquarters

President's Address
Lye Sum brought to light the current economy climate situation ie. retrenchment, etc. He realised the impact when there were more than 100 applicants for the post of Technician, even degree holders applied. The economy might take a few years to recover. We should sharpen our saw to be better communicators with good team spirit & support.

Table Topics
Eng Kai was the Table Topics Master. His topics were about money. Table Topics speakers were:
1) Poh Lian
There is a saying "Money is the root of all evil." And there is another saying "Love of money is the root of all evil." What is the difference in these 2 sayings?
2) Koh Ho Peng - 1st time guest
Money is a form of paper and metal, but has been created and designed nicely so that it can be used as a form of exchange. If there is no such thing as money, how could our world survive today?
3) Eng Meng Choon - 1st time guest
We are moving toward cashless society, whereby electronic payments are replacing traditional ways of payment. Discuss the pros and cons.
4) Belinda
People are motivated by money. Since young, children are told to study hard so that they can find a better job when they grow up to earn more money. As adults, we work hard so that we can have better bonuses, yearly increments and promotions. Comment on this form of motivation.
5) Siaw Yen
Many people spend their health gaining wealth, and then have to spend their wealth to regain their health.
6) Kenny - 1st time guest
Assume that one day your child won one million dollars from lottery. As a parent, how would you guide your child?

Prepared Speeches
1) Beng Kee, P6 (Speech Title: Water, water everywhere)
Spoke on whitewater rafting. Cited examples, statistics from his research work done on this challenging activity.

2) Siva, AP4 (Speech Title: Moment of Madness)
Told a story about how he developed an interest in soccer during primary school days, playing soccer under the void decks and unpleasant encounters with a huge scary man with tattoos who disliked boys playing football under void deck.

3) Lye Sum, AP5 (Speech Title: Tan's Spirit) - Completed Storytelling Advanced Manual
Brought the history of the late philanthropist Mr Tan Kah Kee, in the field of education, to life. Told about his early days where he established his business in pineappple plantations thru his risk-taking abilities. In decades thereafter, he founded schools, one of them being Chinese High School.

Project Evaluation
Belinda (SIM 1 TMC), Siaw Yen (NTU Alumni TMC) & Eng Hwa (Chua Chu Kang TMC) fedback on the areas done well and gave suggestions for improvement. Siaw Yen evaluated Siva's speech using the acroymn

Theresa thanked those who used the word of the day. She covered the not so good use of language & good use of language.

Special Segment - Area Contests
Our Area Governor, Belinda, took the time to encourage members to participate in contests. She related how she helped to organise SIM Students TMC contests. There were many contestants & some non-TM students who attended signed on after viewing the contests to join the Club. Also, SIM Management were impressed & agreed to have the Divn B contests to be held in SIM.

Kenny, Meng Choon, Yatimala, Ho Peng & Alvin who were 1st time guests had an enriching evening. Some of them were busy submitting their application forms to join us as members. We'll register with TI once membership fees are paid.

Thanks to Kay Chuan who bought food & souvenirs for visiting TMs.
