11 Jun 08, 12th Chapter Meeting@Headquarters

Opening Address
President Theresa reflected on Theme of the Evening "We've arrived, and to prove it we're here". It was timely as it was this term's final meeting. She shared about the movie "Pursuit of Happiness" starring Will Smith where his character Chris Gardner had to overcome life's obstacles. We should breakthrough barriers & go for victory.

Table Topics
Aloysius conducted the Impromptu speeches session. His topics were based on current events such as increase in food prices, charity efforts for recent disasters, etc. Amazingly, all 3 guests spoke without being called upon, how brave of them.

Prepared Speeches

1) Eng Kai, P8 (Speech Title: Read Like Lightening, Crash Like Thunder)
Used Powerpoint Presentation to aid his speech on:
Speed reading: Omission, Visualise, Chunking & Guidance
Pitfalls: Domain knowledge, Lang. Mastery & Lang. Corruption

2) Poh Lian, 5th Adv Project (Speech Title: How Monkey Looks for Trouble)
Told a story involving an old woman, monkey & coconut candy with animated sound effects. Ended with "Do not trouble trouble until trouble troubles you".

3) Siva, 5th Adv Project (Speech Title: Best New Artist Award)
Did acceptance speech for Grammy Award win for Best New Artist.

Project Evaluation

Song Kun (Bukit Batok TMC), Song Lang (Chua Chu Kang TMC) & Frederick (S'pore Poly TMC) highlighted the plus points of the speakers and gave recommendations for improvement.

Language Evaluation
Kenneth gave an evaluation on
1) Use of Word of the Day
2) Exciting use of language (creative)
3) Lacked excitement (incorrect pronunciation)
Credited those who used language tools/figures of speech: Idioms, Metaphors, Alliteration, Rhyme, Anaphora, Cataphora & Onomatopoeia

Song Lang (Chua Chu Kang TMC) was highlighted as being the "best user of creative language". LE suggested that the "Timer" could say out the timings in a more creative way eg. time for ABC's exciting speech was 7 min.

Lye Sum gave a thorough Ah Counter's Report by organising it in the ascending order of the number of pause fillers used.









3 guests, Mary from Ang Mo Kio campus and Jia Jian & Juliana from Yishun campus were briefed by VPE1, Lye Sum.

Toastmaster of the Evening
Velkumar who acted as our "celebrity" host and conducted the program.







Thanks to Kay Chuan who bought food (got a chance to eat new product, Onion Rings from McDonalds) & souvenirs for visiting Toastmasters.
