23 Jul 08, Exco Installation cum 1st Chapter Meeting@Dover

Outgoing President's Address
Tonight is a very special night - the official end to term 2007/2008 & beginning of term 2008/2009. Upon reflecting on the past term's meetings, I'm grateful for the fellowships, food and fun as well as tremendous learning, growth and achievement. I would like to thank the ExCo members for making all these things possible.
The theme for this evening is "Everything has its seed". We are going to witness a new beginning in ITE Toastmasters Club. Every growth starts from a seed being planted and tonight we will be planting a new seed of greatness, achievement and success for our Club. I'm confident that this new beginning will bring about greater things to our walks as Toastmasters.

Exco Installation
We had the honour of Aziz Mustajab, DTM, District 80 Lieutenant Governor Marketing to carry out the installation of the Exco for the new term.

President's Inaugural Address
It was the year 1996 Olympics at Atlanta, USA. It was the 1.5km race. A young man, Hicham El Guerrouj (his fans fall him El-G) was almost on the verge of winning when he trail second behind the front runner, a South African. At the bell, indicating the last lap, he makes his move in attempting to overtake; instead, he accidentally kicked the front runner’s ankle. Both fell. The South African balances himself and went on to win the race. El-G picked himself up and finished last. He cried his heart out, it was a sad day for him, unable to achieve his gold medal dream.
Hicham El Guerrouj didn’t give up and the following few months, he competed in the mile, 1.5km and 5km went on to become the world champion since 1997.
He was the favorite to win the 2000 Sydney Olympics. However, he came in second as the first two runner’s race to the finishing point. He lost to another much hungrier South African. Again, he was unable to achieve his gold medal dream.
El-G didn’t give up and went on to win the 2004 Athens Olympics, eight years after he first competed and on his third Olympics.
At specific point of his journey, El-G assessed where he was then and how he had gotten there. When he failed in 1996, he went on to beat the winner in the professional circuit. He re-assesses himself and continued to win the world championship in 1997.
In the 2000 Sydney Olympics, he came in second. He did likewise to take stock of the situation, decide on his next goal and map out a new training plan.
Eventually, in 2004 at the Athens Olympics, he made it to achieve his goal of becoming an Olympic champion after completing another round of taking stock of the situation, deciding on his next goal and coming out with a new roadmap.
We are fortunate to be in the same position as El-G. We’re now at the beginning of the new toastmaster year.
Did you take stock of where you’re now? Set goals and paint your roadmap?
If you’re at speech project number two, then assess yourself. Do you wish to set a Project 10 as a goal? What do you do now to get from where you are to where you want to go? Perhaps your roadmap may include doing 2 projects every quarter to reach your final destination.
Some of us are at CC. Do assess whether if you would consider moving to CL and ACB.
Yet some have stagnated for many years. When would you want to assess yourself, set your goal and plant your seed, and proceed to look after it by sketching your roadmap?
The team of Exco members has assessed itself; set goals and sketch a roadmap for the club. They are…
1. continue to practice the four core values of Toastmasters International: integrity, dedication to excellence, service to the member and respect for the individual.
2. build our membership from the current 18 to at least 30 members by Jun 2009 with like-minded ITE staff & Alumni members who are motivated to improve their public speaking skills, and
3. qualify for at least the "Select Distinguish Club" award (7 DCP goals) by Jun 2009 through participating actively in Club & TI organized activities.
Hicham El G declare retirement from middle distance running in 2006.
A few months later he says he will run the marathon. Was he attempting to better Paul Tergat's world marathon best of 2:04.55? Who knew? So don’t wait. Do the assessment; set your goal and sketch the roadmap.
Look after that seed to achieve your goal.
